UK reviews penalties for export of controlled goods to Eritrea

The UK’s Department for International Trade , Regulatory Policy Committee, and the Export Control Joint Unit have published the results of a post-implementation review of the Export Control (Eritrea and Miscellaneous Amendments) Order 2011, which implements EU trade sanctions. The Order introduced penalties for UK exporters found to be in breach of sanctions concerning the trade in ‘controlled goods’ (arms) from the EU to Eritrea. The review related to the penalties rather than the monitoring of businesses’ adherence to the rules, which is the responsibility of HM Revenue and Customs. It recommended that the policy ‘be kept in its current form.’ The Order will be revoked and replaced with an equivalent instrument when the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act comes into force.
