EU and China to act on SALW in Africa

The European Union and the People’s Republic of China signed an agreement on 28 February aimed at promoting dialogue on conventional arms controls, with a view to reducing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (‘SALW’) in Africa. The agreement, which builds on previous initiatives including the joint declara­tion on non-proliferation and disarmament signed in December 2004, commits the EU to ‘The establishment and development of a joint African-EU-Chinese Expert Working Group on conventional arms and a joint African-EU-Chinese Research Centre on conventional arms’.
