EU announces new steps against Syria

The European Union has announced new sanctions against Syria in an effort to bring greater pressure to bear on the regime to cease its attacks on civilian centres. Key elements of the new measures are that they:   Impose an asset-freeze on the Central Bank of Syria and on seven Syrian government ministers; Prohibit the sale, supply, export and transport of gold, precious metals and diamonds to the Syrian government or to the Central Bank of Syria, and the purchase, import and transport of those goods from them (and related technical assist­ance); Prevent access to EU airports of all cargo-only...
