Export Control Organization publishes ‘short notice suspension mechanism’, increasing transparency around exports

The UK’s Export Control Organization (‘ECO’) has announced a new mechanism whereby it is can suspend licence applications at short notice where the applications being processed are for exports to countries which are ‘experiencing a sharp deterioration in security or stability’. The move is one of a new package of measures being taken in the wake of a review of UK export policy in the context of the Arab Spring, during which time UK defence exports to a number of Middle Eastern countries were sharply scrutinized by the press and public at large.
