U.S. to resume defence exports to Bahrain

On 11 May, the U.S. government announced that it is to resume some defence exports to Bahrain despite the concerns of civil rights groups and democracy campaign­ers regarding ongoing human rights violations in the Gulf state. Bahrain is an important U.S. ally in the Gulf; it also has long-standing sovereignty-related disputes with Iran. In a statement, the U.S. State Department said that in the interests of national security it had ‘decided to release additional items and services for the Bahrain Defense Force, the Coast Guard, and the National Guard for the purpose of helping Bahrain maintain its external defence capabil­ities....
