Canada bans Russian steel products and aluminium imports

Canada has banned imports of aluminium and steel products from Russia, saying it was part of its efforts to deny President Vladimir Putin the ability to generate revenues to fund Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

‘Effective immediately, the Special Economic Measures Regulations have been amended to prohibit the importation of all Russian aluminium products, including unwrought aluminium, aluminium sheets, and finished products such as containers and other household items made from aluminium,’ announced Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s finance minister, who is also the deputy prime minister.

The ban also covers all primary Russian steel products, including iron and non-alloy steel, semi-finished, and finished products such as tubes and pipes.

‘We are ensuring Putin cannot pay for his war by selling aluminium and steel in Canada, in coordination with action taken by the United States,’ she said in a 10 March statement.

In 2021, Canada imported $45 million of aluminium and $213 million of steel products from Russia.
