Canada to impose sanctions on Israeli settlers following US lead
The government of Canada is working on imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers in the Palestinian territories, following in the footsteps of the United States which last week announced measures against four settlers.
‘We will be sanctioning extremist settlers and we will also bring new sanctions on Hamas leaders,’ Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said, 3 February.
Last week, US President Joe Biden issued an executive order imposing sanctions on four Israeli settlers who had carried out attacks against Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank or against Israeli peace activists. The order called for a freezing of accounts.
On 5 February, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich slammed Biden’s order and called on Israeli banks not to comply, but the country’s central bank warned that not non-compliance could expose Israeli banks to risks.
