Russia extends EU counter-sanctions

On 30 June, Russian President Putin issued an executive order extending certain sanctions against the EU from 1 January 2018 until 31 December 2018. The move came after the European Council renewed sector-specific sanctions against Russia for an additional six months, targeting the defence, energy and finance industries, as well as access to certain dual-use goods.

Russia’s counter-sanctions, first imposed in 2014 and 2015 in response to EU sanctions over Russia’s annexation of Crimea, concern agricultural produce, foodstuffs and raw materials, and ban import of such goods into Russia from designated countries.
