Australia trials new ‘two-step’ cryptography licences

Aims to achieve balance between research information free flow and national security interests.

Australia’s Department of Defence Export Controls (‘DEC’) says it is about to begin ‘a trial of 2-Step Permits for information security and cryptography research’. According to DEC, ‘The first permit is a broad permit to enable the early stages of collaboration and research to proceed with a minimal level of regulation and provide a trigger (via a notification from the researcher) for DEC to assess if a second permit is required.
