Bert specialises in international trade, customs and VAT law and  advises clients on matters related to the international and domestic exchange of goods and services. International trade measures, sanctions and export controls, customs, excise duties and VAT issues are familiar parts of his practice.

Bert worked for Loyens & Loeff in Singapore in 2006 and 2007 and has expanded his expertise in the international trade group of a large U.S. law firm in 2008.

He has long-standing experience in representing clients in the defence, automotive, information technology and  E-commerce sectors and has specific expertise in the food sector.

Bert assists his clients by drafting compliance programmes, giving training courses, as well as in performing internal scans and audits. He represents clients before the Belgian and Dutch authorities and courts as well as before the European Commission, its advisory committees, and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

He heads the Loyens & Loeff International Trade & Customs team which has a wealth of experience handling trade and customs issues on behalf of manufacturers, exporters, importers and end-users from the perspective of Dutch, Belgian, Luxembourg and Swiss law.

Bert was admitted to the Brussels Bar in 2000 and practises in Dutch, English and French. He is the current president of the Global Legal Customs Association, an independent network of trade and customs lawyers practising in the major trading jurisdictions of the world.
