Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Sara Nordin is a U.S. and UK qualified lawyer – with a Swedish background and experience working in Hong Kong – focusing on sanctions and export control (e.g. dual-use and military goods) issues in the EU.

As part of the specialist EU export controls and sanctions team at White & Case, Sara regularly advises multinational entities on matters relating to EU law and Member State enforcement in this context. She works closely with experts in the firm’s other offices, particularly in Brussels, Washington, DC and London. Being originally from Sweden, Sara’s focus with respect to national licensing procedures and enforcement often lies with the Scandinavian countries.

Examples of Sara’s wide-ranging EU export control and sanctions work include regularly advising companies and financial institutions on all aspects of the sanctions against Russia and Crimea (e.g. capital market measures, goods/services controls, and investment/financing restrictions), assisting major Asian entities in obtaining multijurisdictional export licences for R&D projects, interpreting control lists (under military, dual-use and/or sanctions regimes) for manufacturing/trading companies, and assessing national controls for shipping companies. Concerning Iran sanctions, she has advised European companies on current sanctions compliance and possible future lifting or suspension of measures. She regularly works on internal compliance checklist and due diligence matters (e.g. potential liabilities of financing and acquisitions), and general contractual negotiations in this context. In addition, Sara often advises non-EU companies on the potential impact of EU sanctions outside the EU, and frequently publishes updates on sanctions developments (particularly rapidly changing sanctions against Ukraine/Russia, Iran, Libya and Syria). She also gives regular presentations and internal compliance trainings on the topic.

Originally a U.S. customs lawyer mainly, Sara’s broader practice covers international trade, customs and regulatory matters in both the United States and the EU. She advises clients in a wide range of industrial sectors, from IT and oil & gas to medical equipment and cosmetics.
