Sven De Knop is a partner in Sidley Austin’s Global Arbitration, Trade and Advocacy Group. He helps clients understand and navigate the complex web of EU and international laws and regulations governing the trade of goods, technology and services.
Sven assists clients in international enforcement actions, including in the areas of economic sanctions and export controls. He leads Sidley’s EU Trade & Investment Controls practice, closely collaborating with Sidley’s U.S. Trade & Investments Controls teams.
He assists clients in understanding how the relevant legal framework applies to their business, including the application of blocking statutes; conducting gap and risk assessments; the design and implementation of global compliance programs, including relevant policies and supporting standard operating procedures; obtaining appropriate authorisations and licences; the classification of dual-use items; with internal investigations and self-disclosures; with compliance audits; with (criminal) enforcement investigations; and with litigation. He regularly counsels on cross-border enforcement and litigation issues.
A significant part of his work consists of deal support, including pre-closing due diligence and post-closing compliance, and foreign direct investment screening requirements.
Sven has been recognised as a Leading Individual by Chambers since 2013 and Who’s Who since 2016. In the International Trade/WTO chapter of Chambers Europe 2018, sources recommended him as ‘a razor-sharp litigator who wins highly complex arguments by putting them in simple terms’. He is also listed in Who’s Who Legal 2018 for Trade & Customs, whilst in the 2016 edition sources from the publication described him as ‘a formidable trade expert with lots of experience’, ‘very responsive’ and ‘a quick thinker’. Most recently, Sven was recognised by Law360 2018 as a ‘Rising Star’ in International Trade.
