EU extends Libya sanctions against three people

The EU Council has extended its Libya sanctions against three people for six months (28 September). Council Decision (CFSP) 2018/1465)) amends (CFSP) 2015/1333 in view of the ‘continuing instability and gravity of the situation in Libya’. Agila Saleh Issa Gwaider, Khalifa Ghwell, and Nuri Abu Sahmain are now subject to EU travel bans and asset freezes until 2 April 2019.

EU sanctions were first imposed on Libya in 2011 to implement UN Security Council resolution 1970, which aimed to halt the repression of civilians by Muammar Al-Gaddafi’s regime. It imposed an arms embargo and travel ban and asset freeze on the Gaddafi family and some of his officials. Further EU restrictive measures were then imposed on those involved in human rights abuses.
