EU implements first UN sanctions on Mali

The EU has implemented the first designations under the UN Mali sanctions regime, established in September 2017. The Mali sanctions regime allows the UN to impose travel bans and asset freezes on those who violate or obstruct a 2015 peace deal, prevent the delivery of aid, commit human rights abuses or recruit child soldiers.

Three individuals, Ahmoudou Ag Asriw, Mahamadou Ag Rhissa, and Mohamed Ousmane Ag Mohamedoune, are now subject to EU travel bans. The blacklisting places the EU in sync with the Security Council Committee’s decision on 20 December to approve the sanctioning of those individuals.

The UN sanctions aim to uphold the 2015 peace deal signed by Mali’s government and separatist groups, which is being compromised by violent Islamist militants in central and northern Mali, who have launched attacks across the region.
