Japan vows more sanctions on Russia, as EU close to unleashing fresh package of measures

Tokyo will impose further sanctions on Russia and continue financial aid to Ukraine, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa told a meeting of G7 foreign ministers and European Union (‘EU’) high representatives,

‘Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan will continue to implement further sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine,’ the foreign ministry in Tokyo said about the 8 November meeting.

‘Regarding assistance, she explained that Japan has announced and has been steadily implementing a total of 7.6 billion US dollars to support Ukraine,’ the ministry said.

It reported that G7 ministers vowed to continue support for Ukraine, despite trouble in other parts of the world, a probable reference to the Middle East, where Israel’s continuation of a military operation in Gaza has stoked fears of a wider conflict.

The ‘G7 will remain united in its attitude to impose severe sanctions against Russia and provide strong support for Ukraine, even in today’s international situation,’ the statement said.
