TikTok files lawsuit against US government

TikTok has filed a lawsuit against the US government, charging that a new US law aiming to ban the video app in the United States, is ‘unconstitutional.’

The US Congress has ‘taken the unprecedented step of expressly singling out and banning TikTok,’ according to the lawsuit, filed in the US Court of Appeals. Last month President Biden signed a bill that called for a ban on TikTok unless it divests from ByteDance, its Chinese owner, within a given timeframe.

‘The “qualified divestiture” demanded by the Act to allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States is simply not possible: not commercially, not technologically, not legally. And certainly not on the 270-day timeline required by the Act,’ the lawsuit said.

US officials and lawmakers who support the ban claim Tik-Tok is a national security concern because the personal data of users in America could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, an allegation denied by ByteDance.
