US chipmaker Micron under scrutiny in China as tech war heats up

China has fired a new salvo in the intensifying tech war with the United States, announcing a cybersecurity review of Micron, one of the largest chip makers in the US.

A notice by the Cyberspace Administration of China said it will implement ‘a cybersecurity review of products sold by Micron in China.’

The notice, dated 31 March, said that was ‘in order to ensure the security of the key information infrastructure supply chain, prevent network security risks caused by hidden product problems, and maintain national security’ in accordance with Chinese law.

Washington has been pressuring allies around the world to deny advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology to China.

Japan and the Netherlands have both announced bans or export controls on chip technology and South Korea is also being encouraged to do the same.
